Conflicted – Chapter 57

‘Why did Juliana come and meet with Xi Men, when she said she wants to mend things with him, and chooses not to offend him or make him even more unhappy with her presence to his office that may interrupt him working?’ Xiao You thought to herself.

She scratched her head.

And then she folds her hands on her chest.

‘She has also mentioned about the hassle to meet Xi Men…’

‘Maybe she didn’t mind doing so as long as she can meet him?’

‘But still…’

She frowned.

‘It is still down to the fact about offending him or not,’

‘She made a good point that if she were to offend him… she may make reconciliation tough…’

Xiao You tilts her head.

Knock! Knock!

She straightened her head and her gaze went to the door.

Secretary Xu opened the door and looked at Xiao You sitting on one of the chairs in the ballroom.

“Miss Yang,” Secretary Xu called, “Mrs. Xi Men has…” he paused.

“Juliana has left?” Xiao You asked, looking at Secretary Xu.

“Yes, Miss Yang. She has left,”

“Okay…” Xiao You rose to her feet. “So… I can see Xi Men now?”

“Yes, Miss Yang,” Secretary Xu said.

“Thank you…” Xiao You said, grabbing her handbag and then she walked out from the boardroom where Secretary Xu holds the door open.

After she walked out from the boardroom, Secretary Xu closed the door and followed her as she walked to Xi Men’s CEO room.

‘I wonder why Juliana is here…’ Xiao You thought to herself.

She reached Xi Men’s CEO room.

Without knocking, Xiao You twists the door knob and opened the door.

She finds Xi Men sitting down on his seat, with his right hand on the forehead; supporting the weight of his head with the elbow on the desk.

She tilts her head as she looked at him.

‘Why does he look troubled…’

“I didn’t hear you knock, Secre…” Xi Men said as he lifted his head up, looking straight at Xiao You and he halts his statement.

*PAK (door closed).

Xi Men is utterly surprised to see Xiao You here in his office.

First, he had not seen her for a week now.

She did not pick up his calls.

She doesn’t respond to his messages.

But the most worrying thing is…

Juliana had just left!

Did… did they meet up?

He looked at the closed door, and then he looked at her.

“Did you just come into my office?” Xi Men asked anxiously.

“Umm…” she frowns slightly at that question, which she finds it weird.

What does he means by ‘office’?

His CEO room?

Or his office tower?

She didn’t know what he meant, but… probably he meant the former.

“Yeah… I… I just walked in… err…?” she didn’t even know how to answer him.

Of course she just comes in into his room.

It’s not that she has been here in this room all along.

And also, she can’t be flying into his room from the window.

“Did you… did you see…” he stammered.

“Oh,” Xiao You said, understand what he meant now. “You mean, Juliana?”

His eyes brightened up now. “You saw her?”

He cannot imagine what happened in the meeting between Xiao You and Juliana.

What did Juliana do, or might do to Xiao You?

But Xiao You looks… perfectly fine.

“Did she…”

“No,” Xiao You interrupts Xi Men, “No, I didn’t see Juliana,”

Xi Men closed his eyes and then breathes a sigh of relieve.

He thought he almost had a heart attack.

He opened his eyes and looked at her, “I didn’t say it was Juliana. And if you didn’t see her… how did you know it is Juliana?”

“I actually came a while ago,” Xiao You said, making her way to the chair in front of his desk.

“A while ago?” Xi Men asked.

She nodded as she sits down. “Almost barged in, but managed to stop in time by Secretary Xu. He told me Juliana is in the room with you, so he asked me to wait in the boardroom. I don’t know how long I have waited there though,”

So that explains why she didn’t see Juliana.

If Xiao You has been waiting in the boardroom, then Juliana surely did not see Xiao You.

Xiao You exhaled a deep relieving breath. “Thank goodness for Secretary Xu. I cannot imagine what would happen if she saw me entering your CEO room just like that,”

“It is just a protocol. No one is allowed entry into my room if I am talking to someone else,” Xi Men said.

“Oh,” Xiao You said. “And I thought he was really smart… that he needs to hide me away from meeting Juliana,”

Xi Men did not say anything for a few seconds. “But Secretary Xu has never made someone wait in the boardroom,” Xi Men said. “After all, everyone who wants to see me has to make an appointment first. And if Lei, Mei Zhuo or Ah Si came… they will just wait for me outside of my room, right in front of Secretary Xu’s table,”

“Oh,” Xiao You responded.

Then why does Secretary Xu did that to her, making her wait for him in the boardroom?

“But he is smart, nevertheless. He wouldn’t be my secretary if he isn’t,”

Xiao You smirks.

He exhaled a deep breath. “Secretary Xu did the right job to hide you in the boardroom. I don’t care whatever reason he has to make you wait in the boardroom, but he did the right thing. Thanks to him, we have avoided a crisis,” he then lightly pressed his fingers on his closed eyes.

He took a deep breath, and then lifted his head up to look at her. “Juliana found out about you,”

“Umm… I know…”

Xi Men is taken aback. “You knew?”

Xiao You nodded, “Lei told me,”

“Lei?” Xi Men frowned.

“He came over to the penthouse last night after the dinner with Juliana. He told me,” Xiao You said.

Xi Men looked at her, and his gaze turned to a glare. “I waited for him in his house until late, and he was at your place, talking to you instead of updating me?”

Xiao You swallowed the lump in her throat. “I…”

“And I get a shock of my life when Juliana told me she knew. And all of you found out about this last night?”

“At least Lei had the courtesy to come and tell me and with that, at least I know what I should do with Juliana now; to avoid her and not having to pretend that I am not someone her husband loves,” Xiao You said. “But whether she knew about me or not, if I really stumbled onto her at the door just now, I’ll freak out too,”

Xi Men closed his eyes and then takes a deep breath, and then exhaled it frustratingly. “Doesn’t matter. You said Lei go to the penthouse. I thought your parents are home,”

“They are coming back today,” Xiao You said. “They will reach in the evening,”

Xi Men nodded briefly. “I see,” after exhaling a deep breath, “So why are you in my office now when you never reply to my texts nor answer my calls?”

“I actually want to talk to you,” Xiao You said.

“Talk? Again?” Xi Men asked.

That’s the exact same words Juliana used.

Xiao You looked at Xi Men lifted his head up and took another deep breath.

Looking at him like this, she isn’t sure if she should continue with her reason of visiting.

It felt like she came at the wrong time.

But… will there be any other proper time after this?

And the most is she could wait for a few days, but…

“Since the moment I entered your room, you look bothered,” Xiao You said.

Xi Men squeezed his nasal bridge.

“What is going on between you and Juliana now?” Xiao You asked.

Xi Men exhaled a deep breath. “She came to pass me the papers,”

“Divorce papers. She had signed it,” Xi Men said.

Xiao You is surprised.

Juliana, who was still hoping for reconciliation with Xi Men early yesterday, decided to sign the paper within a day, after finding out she (Xiao You) is the woman Xi Men loves?

Her heart is beating rapidly, and her guilt reaches sky high; that Juliana decided to divorce Xi Men because of her…?

“Be… because of… me…?” she asked.

After a delay of 5 seconds, “Because of something she said years ago,” Xi Men said. “She said she will leave when my second woman comes back,”

Xiao You looked at Xi Men.

Xiao You remembers this. Juliana told her this. Juliana said she will stick by Xi Men unless the second woman comes back… and she will leave on her own.

“That is why Juliana signed it,” Xi Men said.

‘At the end of the day… it is still me…’ Xiao You thought to herself.

‘Because I came back…’

Xiao You feels utterly guilty now.

She felt she had really destroyed a marriage.

She slowly raised her eyes to look at Xi Men.

He sighed, and then pressed his nasal bridge.

But why is Xi Men’s reaction like this…?

Isn’t this is what he wanted?

To divorce from Juliana?

Why does he look like he regretted…?

Did he regret it?

“Xi Men,” Xiao You called.

Xi Men dropped his right hand down (from squeezing his nasal bridge) onto the desk and looked at Xiao You as she called him.

“Are you upset about this? Are you regretting this? Go,” Xiao You extends both of her hands out and gripped onto Xi Men’s hand on the desk. “Go after Juliana. Forget about this whole thing and start all over with her. Go after her. Quickly. She won’t be too far away…” she begins to shake his hand.

His other free hand grips onto her hand that is shaking his right hand.

“I am not regretting about the divorce,” he claimed. “I just feel guilty, for I have been an awful husband to her for the last 5 years,”

She looked at him.

Her gaze then goes down to his hand; on her hand.

She retracts her hands.

Xi Men looked at her hands that are moving away.

She pressed her lips together as her gaze lowered slightly.

“I know it (the divorce) is upsetting. But I have no regrets,” Xi Men said.

She looked at him.

“I really have no regrets,” he said.

She swallowed the lump in her throat.

“But this may stay with me for a while. It is not easy getting rid of the awfulness in me, and the thoughts that I married and brought someone who I don’t love into my life… and she continued putting efforts into the marriage believing it will work… and suffered for the last 5 years… it is a mistake in the first place,” he uttered.

She gazes at him.

“I’ll only marry the one I love. I’ll be nice to her, and only her. She won’t get a tinge of awfulness from me, because I love her, I won’t do that to her,” he said, and then he gazes at her.

Xiao You understood his statements as well as his gaze entirely.

She turned her head away.

“After this upsetting feeling in me dies, I will officially go after you,” Xi Men uttered.

Xiao You straightened her head and her gaze goes to him. Her eyes brightened up upon hearing that.

She immediately swallowed the lump in her throat. “I’ve told you before. I will not be with you,”

He continued staring at her, “I’ll wait. I’ll continue waiting until the day comes,”

“Do you know you cannot enforce things onto someone like this?” Xiao You asked.

“So what do you suggest?” he asked nonchalantly.

She swallowed the lump in her throat while she continued staring at him. “Let me go,”

He looked at her, and then he smirks again, his gaze went away. “I thought you said you will leave no matter what,”

“You know what you’ve done,” she uttered. “That is why I came,”

He straightened his eyes and looked at her again. “What did I do this time?” he asked her back.

“I can’t leave the country now,” she said.

He looked at her, unfazed. “So, you knew. Who told you this time?”

“Lei. He told me yesterday. At least he has the courtesy to inform me about this, rather than heartlessly watching me pack my things… knowing I cannot leave,” Xiao You said, looking at Xi Men.

He understands her gaze.

“I am not heartless,” Xi Men retorted.

“You are! Do you want me to pack everything, and have this joyful heart that I am leaving this country to start anew somewhere else, only to go to the airport and find out I can’t leave?” she asked.

“I wanted to tell you. It’s just that you did not respond to my messages. And you don’t want to take my calls,”

“Then why can’t you leave a message to tell me about it if I am not picking up your calls?!

“Because I want to hear your voice,” he said.

She looked at him, and mixed emotions tumbling around in her heart.

“Every reply from you is very precious to me; and your voice…” he uttered. “It soothes me,”

Xiao You bites her lower lip.

“It is a good thing that you know now. Then you don’t have to waste anymore time packing,” he uttered.

“Xi Men, please let me go,” she said. “I… I really wanted to start anew,”

He gazes at her. “You’ve said before; you don’t have anything here. And you don’t have anything anywhere, including San Francisco. So it did not matter to you where you are, you can start anew anywhere. So do that here,” Xi Men said. “I will help you to do that, and make sure you’ll start anew well,”

“Why hold me back when you know I am not going to be with you?” she asked.

“Why leave when anywhere is the same for you to start anew?” he asked.

She looked at him. What is there for her to say, so that he can let her go?

“And I have said before,” he said, tilting his head, “Even if you are not with me, I find contentment in your presence. I will be okay with just seeing you,”

She pressed her lips together. “Xi Men… please… let me…”

“I am sorry about this decision,” Xi Men interrupted and said, looking at her. “I’ve let you go before and I regretted tremendously. I am not going to do the same mistake again,”

She looked at him.

“I am sorry for being very selfish about this,” he adds.

“You do know you are selfish…”

“I do, that is why I am very sorry about it,” he said. “You can do whatever you like in Taiwan. If there is anything I cannot help, I’ll make Lei, Mei Zhuo or Ah Si extend their help,”

“Taiwan? Just Taiwan? I cannot go anywhere else? What if I want to go vacation? You’ll forbid me too?” she asked.

He tilts his head. “You don’t have much in your bank account. You will not go for vacation. And you wanna take a break? Go locally. Taiwan has plenty to offer. They are beautiful everywhere,”

“But it is not the same when you go overseas! What about in the future?! What if I have enough money and I want to travel out of the country?!” she asked.

“Then let me know. I’ll evaluate it on case by case basis,” Xi Men said.

Xiao You looked at him in disbelief. “So, you are monitoring me now?”

“Don’t say it in that way. I let you walk around in Taiwan,” he said. “I just didn’t want you to leave the country and then stay abroad,”

Xiao You looked at Xi Men.

“Xi Men…”

“This topic is closed. We will not talk about this anymore,”

She looked at him.

“Call your airline and tell them you are cancelling the ticket. Ask for a refund. If they can’t, then tell me the amount. I’ll pay you back,” he uttered.

She closed her eyes and then exhaled her deep breath frustratingly.

In no way could she fight against the power of F4.

She heard him exhaling his deep breath too, and then he closed his eyes and squeezed his nasal bridge.

Without saying a word, she stood up, and then walked away from the chair, heading towards the door.

She didn’t even bother to say she is leaving.

Xi Men heard the sound of her heels, so he opened his eyes and looked at her walking away and he didn’t say a word too.

She probably hates him at what he did towards her.

He annoyed one woman (Xiao You).

He hurts another (Juliana).

Xiao You’s eyes strayed upon hearing the ringing phone, although her steps are closing in to the door.

Xi Men dives his hand into his pants’ pocket to take his phone out.

After looking at the screen of his phone, he exhaled a deep breath and then picks up the call. “You could have called earlier,” he uttered the moment he puts the phone on his ear; without saying hello.

Xiao You’s hand reached for the door knob and she opened the door.

She then took the two steps out of the room.

And just right before she closed the door behind her, she heard Xi Men said…

“I already know she knows about Xiao You,” Xi Men gazes to the door and looked at Xiao You, as she slowly, like, really, really slowly, closes the door.
