“Maybe you should start telling me what you crave for, what you want to eat, what is your favorite food so I can plan what and where to buy for you,” Xi Men said, after stuffing the last spoonful of porridge into Xiao You’s mouth.
“I just got pregnant. I don’t have anything that I crave to eat just yet,” Xiao You said, wiping her mouth with tissue.
“I thought craving starts the moment one gets pregnant? Like, 2 months?” Xi Men said, as he disposed the bowl.
“I am not even 2 months yet,” Xiao You said.
“No?” Xi Men asked.
“No, only 6 weeks,” Xiao You said.
Xi Men looked at her. “6 weeks?”
Xiao You then looked at him. At that moment she asked herself, why and how can she be this careless to have exposed herself to someone she hated most when she was trying hard in the beginning that she doesn’t want to expose anything personal to any of the friends?
“What, did you cast me with some sort of black magic?” she asked.
“What? Hell, NO! You think I am a magician or something?!” Xi Men asked.
“What did you put into the porridge?!” she asked him.
“It’s just porridge!”
“Ah. Whatever,” she said as she turned her head.
“Xiao You, 6 weeks?” Xi Men asked.
“You just said so,”
“It has nothing to do with you,” she said.
“Xiao You, Lei’s annual dinner was just 6 weeks ago,”
“If I am the father of the baby, I should be informed,” Xi Men said.
“If you think the baby is yours, then it’s yours,”
“What kind of attitude was that?!”
“Because you keep asking and saying you are the father like there is no other man in this world can be a father. So, if you are so delighted to become a father of someone else’s baby then just go ahead and be one, but be someone else’s because I don’t want you to keep on bugging me. You can be anyone’s as long as not me. You’ve been bugging me the same topic like the whole day and yet you are still asking. I only want peace of mind. Just do whatever you want and say whatever you wanted to say. I don’t bother. Just leave me alone,” she said and crossed her arms on her chest.
Xi Men looked at her and took a deep breath. “Xiao You, I care about you. I only wanted to know who the father is… I want him to be responsible,”
“I don’t need him,”
“But your child needs a father too, you know,” Xi Men said.
Xiao You quiets.
“If it is me… I want you to let me know. I will be responsible,” Xi Men said.
“No. After all, the baby’s father’s question is not important as I am still deciding if I want to keep the baby,” Xiao You said. “In fact, it is not even important because I don’t see the need of him,”
“But why abort… the baby is innocent…”
“So am I,” she looked at Xi Men. “I wasn’t prepared for this at all. I didn’t know I will get pregnant. I am not ready to be a mother,”
Xi Men quiets.
“If you want to talk, can we talk of something else? My mind is a mess when it comes to this,” she pointed at her tummy.
“Okay,” he said. “Okay, then we’ll talk of something else…”
“Or you can choose not to talk,”
“Oh, no. Since I am here and you are awake… I can help you ease your boredom,”
Xiao You laughed. “Ease my boredom? Like? Sex? One night stand?”
Xi Men looked at her. “Well, I meant, if I go back you will be alone here and then you’ll be bored,”
“You can go back now anyway,” Xiao You said.
“No, no, no… it’s still too early to call it a night,” Xi Men said. “It’s just 7.30pm,”
“Doesn’t make a difference. You can go to pub and try to hit on a girl,” Xiao You said. “Maybe your luck is there,”
“I don’t do those anymore, Xiao You,” Xi Men said, pouring a glass of water.
“Then what did you do? Trying to land on a girl in annual dinners? No doubt, they may be richer and up to your standard,” she said, as he handed her the glass of water and she swallowed the water.
“Maybe I’ll try to land on the girl in this hospital’s room 323,” he said.
Xiao You got choked and immediately took the glass of water away from her mouth as she coughed.
“Ehh… are you alright?” Xi Men asked as he took the glass of water from her and placed on the table, and then he patted her back.
“What the hell,” she said in between her coughs.
“What?” he asked her back.
“Ain’t that girl you just said is me?” she asked him back.
“Oh well, yeah. So?”
“Oh come on, you can do better than that,”
“What, you mean you are not good enough as a person?”
“Don’t try to make me happy,”
Xi Men laughed. “I don’t need to do that. And you are single,” he laughed.
“And you bump around,” she said.
Xiao You laughed.
“I am not like that okay!” he yelled in defense.
“Oh boy, I love that,” she laughed.
He was annoyed at first, and then he saw that she is laughing happily, his annoyed face slowly fades off and a small smile formed on his face. “Glad that you are so happy,”
“Oh yeah? You mean I can make fun of you now?” she asked.
“As long as you are happy,” he said.
“Oh,” she said, and her laughter slowly fades off.
“Why?” he asked.
“What?” she asked him back.
“Err… you stopped laughing,” he said.
“I’m done with laughing so I stopped laughing,” she said. “That’s what people do, right? You don’t keep laughing and laughing and laughing,”
“Oh,” he said.
“Heh,” she imitated a stupid fake laugh sound at him.
“Duh,” he said.
She sits there and there were silence.
“Err… do you need me to bring you anything tomorrow…” Xi Men asked.
“Bring me some books,” she said.
“Oh, what books do you read?” he asked.
“Motivational books, comics, magazines…”
Both of them turned to the door.
“Xiao You…” Xiao Qiao called.
“Hi Xiao Qiao,” Xiao You said.
“Hello, Xiao You. Hey, you are here too,” Mei Zhuo said, and then looking at Xi Men.
“Yeah, brought her dinner,” Xi Men said.
“Ar? Dinner? I brought her dinner too…” Xiao Qiao lifted up her hand.
“What is that?” Xiao You asked, and then sniffs as some fragrant smell is filling the room.
“We went to Shihlin market to buy you some street snacks. So… it is fried chicken,” Mei Zhuo said.
“And we are smuggling this into the hospital for you,” Xiao Qiao said.
“And we had to walk damn fast so that the smell does not start to overwhelm to the other wards, patients or nurses in the hospital,” Mei Zhuo said.
“I just gave her porridge,” Xi Men said. “She is full,”
“But it smells damn nice!” Xiao You said, as Xiao Qiao handed it to her.
“But I thought you are not supposed to eat these kinds of stuff,” Xi Men said.
“Pregnant woman can just eat anything,” Xiao Qiao said.
“But that ain’t good for the baby’s development,” Xi Men said.
“Pregnant woman can eat this. Just that not every single damn day,” Mei Zhuo said. “Why? Her every food intake needs to be scanned by you before she can consume it?”
“Well… no. I mean…” he didn’t know what to say as he is just quite anxious about Xiao You. He then looked at Xiao You. “HEY!”
Xiao You looked at him with the fried chicken in her hands and she is already munching it. “What?”
“You just ate porridge and you are now eating the fried chicken!” Xi Men said.
“This is delicious. Nice Taiwan food,” she said as she chomped down the fried chicken.
“You are not full?” Xi Men asked.
“Pregnant woman eats a lot,” Xiao Qiao said. “You gotta allow them to eat these kinds of stuffs once in a while,”
“Oh,” Xi Men said.
“And I don’t mean fried chicken, I mean junk food or snacks,” Xiao Qiao said.
“And soon, you will discover all those sorts of cravings she had 24 hours a day,” Mei Zhuo said.
“Hey, how do you know all these?” Xi Men asked.
“General knowledge; and you’ll know when you watch movies and dramas,” Mei Zhuo said. “And one of my staffs was pregnant back then, she was chomping down a lot of different foods and has always been in the pantry; almost each time when I was there, she will be there,”
“Are you sure she is working since she is at the pantry all the time?” Xi Men asked. “She works in the pantry, isn’t it?”
“Of course not. I saw her at the workplace all the time as well, and she just eats,”
“Then, are you sure she is not stalking you since she knows you will be in pantry?” Xi Men asked.
Mei Zhuo laughed. “No, no, no,”
Xiao Qiao laughed too. “She love her husband very much okay. She had given birth last year,”
Xi Men laughed. And then he switched his glance to Xiao You, and Xiao You is already seen wiping the corner of her lips with a piece of tissue paper. “Hey, you finished?!”
“Oh yeah, while you are busy talking,” Xiao You said.
“That was fast!” he said.
“It is nice,” she said.
“And you refused to eat my porridge just now?” he asked.
“I finished it still, right?” she asked.
“But you eat damn fast! Will it cause indigestion?” asked Xi Men.
“Why are you so nosy?????” Xiao You asked.
“Errr…” Xi Men said.
“Thanks for the food, Xiao Qiao, Mei Zhuo!” Xiao You said.
“No problem,” Xiao Qiao smiled.
Mei Zhuo smiled at her, and he is wondering, since the confession Xiao You made this morning, she is a bit different to them. She seems to be treating them better than how she did at him back then, right before the confession. Or was it just this time?
“It’s nice,” Xiao You said. And then she smacked Xi Men’s arm.
“Ah?” he asked, looking at her.
“Learn from them about what to buy,” Xiao You said.
“Fried chicken? That can be your snack but not as a meal replacement!” Xi Men said. “And my porridge is not that bad anyway!”
“What porridge did you buy?” Mei Zhuo asked.
“It is from the shop 3 streets down my office,” Xi Men said.
“Oh, that famous shop?” Xiao Qiao asked.
“Yeah,” Xi Men said.
“The porridge should be nice, since it is famous!” Xiao Qiao said at Xiao You.
“It is famous does not mean it is nice!” Xiao You replied.
“What?! I had it just now and to me it is good!” Xi Men said. “In fact, damn good!”
“I only said that famous does not mean it is nice. I didn’t say the porridge is not,” Xiao You said. “But yes, the porridge is nice,” she smiled.
“Now she said it already, so don’t be jealous over a fried chicken,” Mei Zhuo smacked Xi Men.
Xiao Qiao laughed. Xiao You smiled.
“Do I have to?!” Xi Men asked Mei Zhuo back and they laughed.
