The Story Of Us – Chapter 25

Ken scratched his head as he looked at the shirt he placed on the bed.

“How to get those out?” he asked himself. And then he scratched his head again. “I’ll send it to the laundry tomorrow,”

Knock! Knock!

Ken heads to the door and opens it. He looked at Rainie standing at the door smiling faintly at him.

“Hi Rainie, what’s up?” he asked her.

“First of all, your suit,” she handed the black suit to him. “Thanks,”

“Oh, alright,” he smiled as he took the suit from her hand. “No problem,” he puts the suit down on the bed. “And the next thing?” he asked.

“Scott messaged me,”

His facial expression changed. “Oh?”

“He said he’s sorry,”

“What else is new?” he asked.

“You’d probably need to read it,” she extends the phone to him, still smiling faintly.

He looked at the phone, before his eyes traveled back to her face. “It’s your privacy, Rainie,”

“It’s okay. Read it,” she said, gently shook the phone at him.

Ken took the phone from her hand.

‘I’m sorry, Rainie. I didn’t mean to hug you like that. It’s because I miss you so much. I’m so sorry for doing that. Please forgive me. I will not hurt you ever again. Promise.’

“Okay…” Ken said.

“Scroll down and read my reply,” she said.

Ken does as she said.

‘It reminds me how disgusted and disrespectful you are. I don’t trust your promise. I don’t need your apology. I only need to look inside me and know what I want. My life without you.’

Ken smiled. He lifted his head up and looked at Rainie. Rainie smiled at him.

“Not too harsh, huh?” she asked.

“In this situation, harsh is only a word that is open for your interpretation,” Ken smiled, passing back the phone to her.

She smiled as she took the phone from his hand, and then she lifted her head up and take a quick look around his room. She saw a shirt on the bed.

“You are going for an interview tomorrow?” she asked.

“I don’t have any interviews,” he said. “Why do you ask?” he then turned and looked into his room, wondering what is in his room that would lead her to ask that.

“Oh, the shirt…”

“Oh…” he said. “That…” he scratched his head.

“Ah, is that the shirt you were wearing just now?” she asked.

“Errr… yeah,” he admitted softly.

“I’m sorry. I cried too much, I smeared my makeup and they are left on it,” she felt guilty for ‘damaging’ his shirt.

He laughed. “It’s okay. It’s quite colorful for now,”

Seeing he laughed, she didn’t feel as bad, but still… “Give me the shirt, I’ll wash it for you,”

“Ah, don’t worry about it. I’ll send it to the laundry shop down the road,” Ken said. “They are the experts. And you; just stay sitting on the couch and not the stool on the bathroom to wash my shirt,”

“I insist,” Ken smiled at her.

She pouted.

He laughed at her pouted face. “You are so cute,”

“You are very kind, Ken. I wonder why your ex doesn’t want you,” she said as she walked to the living room.

His laughter fades. “Because I didn’t spend much time with her,” he took a step out from his room, and closed the door behind him, before he followed her to the living room.

“That’s it?” she asked as she sits down on the couch.

“That is what I know,” he said, sitting down next to her.

“I hope it’s not because you have some secrets that I didn’t know,” she laughed.

He laughed. “Secrets? If I have, of course I won’t tell you my secrets,” his laughter slowly fades. “And you are nice too, Rainie. I wonder why Scott would cheat on you,”

Her laughter immediately fades. “I…”

“Oops. I’m sorry for saying that,” he said, covering his mouth.

She smiled faintly.

She slowly turned to look at him.

“How are you feeling…?” he asked.

She pressed her lips together and then she took a deep breath. “I feel devastated and disappointed… yet… a part of me feels… better,”

“Devastated at how the meeting goes, disappointed with him… and feeling better because the meeting has happened,”

“Oh,” Ken said.

She gave him a forceful smile. “I didn’t expect the meeting is going to turn out like this. I was supposed to be the one being angry because he cheated on me, but he…” she then looked at him. “Ken, I am sorry,”

“I am sorry for dragging you in…”

Ken smiled politely at her. “It is okay. It has happened,”

“I didn’t expect Scott to do that. I can’t believe he is making you the person at fault for whatever had happened,”

“It is not something you want to happen… though I have no idea what both of you had talked…”

“He said you brainwashed me,”

“Ah?” he is surprised.

“About leaving him and stuff. But I know very well what you have done and said… I can still think and decide what is good and what is bad…”

“Glad to know…” Ken mumbled.

“Well… at least the meeting has happened,” Rainie said. “So I hope he can stop bugging me now…”

“As far as I know… you still received a message from him,” Ken smirked.

A small laugh escapes her mouth. “I hope that is about it,”

“From the way you handled things and how the meeting has ended, I am sure he knew you are extremely unhappy now, worse than before,”

She smirked, and then she lowered her head.

“Are you… really alright?” he asked, rubbing her arm.

She turned and looked at him, and she smiled faintly. “A lot of emotions are involved in the meeting. Didn’t expect it will mess me up like that…”

“I understand…”

“I knew I still had feelings for Scott, tried so hard to stay sane… tried so hard not to go back to him… try so hard to remember that he cheated on me…”

He looked at her, didn’t say anything.

“But one meeting is enough to show that… because I keep saying ‘no’ to Scott, he would drag someone else into the situation and put all the blame on someone else, for brainwashing, for manipulating, as though he has been on the right track all the while… until fingers have to point back at him about him cheating on me… that is so… immature. So… ridiculous,”

He just smiled faintly at her, as he knew he is not in the right position to say or comment anything about that.

“I knew I did the right thing by not going back to him. I knew I deserve someone better. I knew I only…” she stopped.

Ken waits for her to continue her statement, but she stopped just right there.

‘I knew I only have to look up to you… on how you moved on and survived a failed relationship due to a cheating partner… and I knew I will have great days ahead and be happy just like you…’ she thought.

Ken remained looking at her. At the back of his mind, he knew, if she wishes to continue, she will. If she didn’t want to say anything, then it is her option too.

It is her situation after all. His appearance right here, right now, is to listen to her.

“I’m… sad,” she said.

Ken didn’t say anything. He lowered his head for a while, and then lifted his head up and looked at her.

Her eyes had turned red. She is trying to suppress the sadness in her so that tears will not form.

Ken extends his hands out.

Rainie slowly turned her head and looked at him.

“If you need a hug…” he said, with his hands still wide open.

She leaned over and hugs him, and he wrapped his hands around her.

She sniffed.

But he didn’t hear her sob. Maybe just a bit of crying…

He knew she needed a hug, or at least someone to console her.

He rubbed her back in silence.

“No makeup on your face this round, right?” he asked, trying to cheer her up.

She laughed upon hearing that and she pulled back slightly, breaking the perfect hug from him. “No,” she replied, and she wiped the tears’ trail on her face. “Maybe just… some tears,” she looked at the small wet patch on his chest.

“That’s okay. Tears will dry,” he smiled, lowering his head to look at the wet patch before he lifted his head to look at Rainie. “I like it more when you smile,”

She smiled wider upon hearing that.

“You will be alright. Always remember that I am here if you need me,” Ken smiled.

She nodded. “Okay,”

“And you can knock on my door, and wake me up in the middle of the night if you need a hug or just someone to talk,”

She laughed. “Why should I disturb your sleep?”

“Just because you needed someone?” Ken asked.

She laughed again.

“Just remember you are not alone, and you will be alright,”

She nodded.

And then silence.

With both of them sitting next to each other and not talking… it does sounds awkward. And just weird.

“I better go and…” he said and then he stood up. “…look for jobs,”

She smiled. “Alright,”

He smiled and he headed to his computer.

He started typing away and Rainie grabbed the remote control and switched on the TV. She makes herself comfortable as she switches channels one after another.

The silence continues, besides the sounds generated by Ken’s typing and also the sounds from the shows in TV.

Ken is actually browsing and reading news, and not looking for jobs as he had already looked for it earlier. There are no new job posts anyway.

Just as when Ken clicked on the browser to open the entertainment section…

“I couldn’t thank you enough,” Rainie suddenly speaks, and she turned to look at Ken.

Ken lifted up his head and looked at her. “I think you’ve been mentioning it a lot,”

“Still, no matter how many times I’ve said it… I will still feel it is not enough,” Rainie said.

Ken smiled. “As long as you are happy, Rainie. It is enough to post as gratitude from you,”

“I’m very happy for the fashion show. I am happy I can still be a part of it,”

“I believe that’s what matters,”

She smiled. “My thanks are not just limited to the fashion show itself,” she slowly lowered her head

“Oh? What else?”

“Long list,” she smiled, and then she looked at him.

A small laugh slipped his mouth. “I’ve done nothing, alright? So there is no list, not to mention a long one,”

“My gratitude commences from the day and time you hit me and send me to hospital,”

His smile faded. “And you call that gratitude. I don’t see how hitting you can be considered as a gratitude,”

She laughed. “Seriously, you can just opt for sending me to clinic… and you don’t have to wait for me in the hospital,”

“It’s my responsibility to ensure that you are alright,”

She smiled. “And you don’t have to come and visit me everyday, you know?”

“Well… umm… I have nowhere to go,” Ken said.

“Oh? Really?” she asked, knowing that is not the real answer. “But you know you could have just stayed at home since you really have nowhere to go,”

He laughed. “Fine, I told you, right? I am taking half of the responsibility too,”

She smiled briefly. “And you kinda try to cheer me up,”

“Kinda? I thought I did? The best thing to cheer a patient up is by buying gifts,”

“Hey, you bought me breakfast every morning when I was in the hospital,”

“Hmm… I thought I still am right now?”

She laughed. “Yes, you are still getting me breakfast everyday now. I remember I anticipated for your breakfast when I was in hospital. Now I am bored because you asked me what I want to eat instead, every single day! Imagine I asked you the same question every morning,”

He laughed. “You see. I am a very boring person. I don’t have many ideas about what to eat for breakfast or making one. So it is best I get you what you want to eat, rather than I get you something and left wondering if you like it or not,”

“I actually liked the anticipation and the surprise. It makes me want to see what you are going to bring for me every time. And I waited for you to come,”

He looked at her as his smile faded. “Seriously?”

Her smile fades as well when she noticed she had probably said too much. “I think… most girls like surprises,” she lowered her head.

“I see…” he said, and left him scratching his head.

At that instant, she remembers about meeting Scott with some other girl on that fateful day. It is still a surprise. But it is not a type of surprise that she likes… of course. “I think… it depends on what type of surprise…” she added, “As not all type of surprises are… good,”

He looked at her, and from her facial expression, it must be about Scott. There is likely nothing else that would make her feeling like this.

“Anyway,” she smiled as she lifted her head. “You’ve been very nice to take care of me. Promptly brings me to hospital for check up, physiotherapy…”

“You are welcome,” he smiled. “I have agreed to do that for you since the beginning. And I have also promised Winnie, remember?”

She laughed.

Rainie lowered her hand and grabbed her phone. She smiled upon seeing who the caller is.

“Sorry, got a call…” Rainie said.

“No problem. Go ahead,” he smiled as he turned his gaze to the computer.

She picks up the call and placed the phone onto her ear. “Hi Barbie,”

Ken smiled looking at her smiling face as he continued surfing and she starts yapping away in front of the TV.

Entertainment: Latest Update.

He scrolls down the page.

Reporters were quick to upload the photos of the red carpet for the fashion show.

Celebrity after celebrity… after celebrity… and then ah!

It is Rainie’s picture.

He smiled as she looked stunningly gorgeous. He was about to call out to Rainie to inform her about the photo that is on the Internet but then immediately realizes she is on the phone… oh well. He smiled. It is alright. He will just enjoy it himself first.

He reads the line right below the photo. ‘Model Rainie on the red carpet before guest-modeled on the runway. When interviewed about her dress, she said – a gift from a friend. When asked about boyfriend Scott, she said ‘she had no relation to him’ and it seems that it is a confirmation from her that they are over.’

“She wears… ‘gift from a friend’,” he mumbled.

And then he scrolls up and looked at the photo again. The pink and white dress fits her perfectly. He smiled. For some reason it just makes him happy.

He then clicked at the headlines for entertainment section to view the news.

After the page has loaded completely, he scrolls and reads the title.

‘Recent rumor about the break-up of model Scott and supermodel Rainie has landed Scott in trouble in modeling industry with him being sidelined and companies are considering to hire other models.’

Ken glanced up at Rainie who is still happily talking on the phone.

His eyes then returned to the article. And then he remembered something…

‘I am going to prove to you, Rainie, this guy is manipulating you and trying to be near to you because of your popularity! And I am the one who loves you dearly!’

Ken frowned upon remembering the statement that was uttered by Scott earlier. “That is strange. What have they talked about, that he would suddenly say and refer me as that?”

And then his eyes strayed.

Ken’s capability to interpret hints has been put to full and good use right now.

“You don’t want to sleep? It’s already 1am,” Rainie said, switching off the television.

“I am reading some stuff,” Ken said, looked at Rainie rose to her feet from the couch.

“What is so interesting?” she asked.

“Just some news,” he said as he then sensed that she is going to walk to him, so he quickly clicked to a different tab to view the latest update.

“I wanna read too,” she said as she walked to him.

“Ah, there is something I want to show you,” Ken said.

“Is it?” she asked.

“Yeah,” he smiled as she stood next to him.

He scrolls down and then he shows her the photo of her at the red carpet of the fashion show.

“Wow, so fast? We were there like…. 6 hours ago!” she said.

“I think they update this right after the red carpet,” he laughed. “This is you,”

“Of course I know this is me!” she said as she looked at her own photo.

“You are very pretty tonight,” he smiled.

“Thanks. I like the dress,” she smiled. “Thanks for picking this, Ken,”

“It’s my pleasure. As long as you look nice in it. I will not try to pick something that does not fit you and make you look horrendous in it,”

She laughed. “You actually have good eyes for details, I noticed,”

“Maybe that is how I was being prepped when I have to prepare for tenders,”

“Tenders and fashion are two different things,” she playfully smacked him.

“You didn’t say it’s for fashion. You said details!” he said.

She laughed. “Right, my fault,”

He smiled. “Alright. It’s quite late now. You had a long and tiring night, you should go to bed,”

“Yeah, long day today,” she stretched her hands. “I’m going to sleep. You should sleep earlier too. You had a long day too,”

He smiled. “Yeah, I run a lot,” he laughed.

“Yeah, with a ‘heavy load’,” she pointed at herself, indicating he had carried her and run from runway to dressing room and fro.

“Your weight is just alright,” he smiled.

“Thanks for making me happy by saying I’m not fat,”

He bursts out laughing. “If you add another kilogram in your body, you still won’t look fat. Don’t worry,” he remained laughing.

“You know what. I don’t like you,” she sulked.

He laughed at her.

“LAUGH!” she said.

“Alright! Alright!” he immediately gave her a straight face.

She looked at him and laughed. “That’s a very fake and ugly,”

“Sorry, sorry, I cannot hold it,” and he laughed.

And soon their laughter fades.

She smiled at him. “You really cheer me up, regardless if you do it by intention, spontaneously or by mistake. You just did,”

“I’m just being me,” Ken smiled.

She patted at him. “I’m going to bed,”

“Okay, goodnight. Sleep tight,” he said.

“You too. Goodnight,” she said as she took a step forward.

“Umm… do you need me to lend you my hand to…”

“I’m fine with walking already. As you had always known and I’ve even modeled on the runway,” she interrupted.

He smiled. “And you already know what I want to say before I finish with my statement,”

“Of course, you asked me this almost every single day. So predictable,” she said, rolling her eyes.

He laughed. “Alright. Walk carefully,”

“Goodnight. See you tomorrow,”

“See you,” he smiled.

And she walked to her room.

He turned and looked at his computer.

He then typed…

Search: Supermodel Rainie and Model Scott.

Search Result. Showing 10 of over 2,000,000 results.

He took a deep breath. “I can’t be reading over 2 million news,”

Recent news.

‘Model Scott denied the relationship between him and Rainie are over.’

“Kinda figured…” Ken mumbled as he scrolls down to the next news.

‘Rainie attended red carpet of fashion show alone. Stating partner had nervous breakdown’

He smiled. He lied to her about stomach discomfort so he made her attended the red carpet alone.

Yes, he planned everything for her. He had to pretend he had stomachache, just to buy time to get Vic to come out to get him to the backstage. He does it in a way to surprise Rainie.

But there is something that nobody knows.

His smile faded.

“I am nobody. I can’t be attending as her partner… not on such an exclusive fashion show. Not to be captured on a photograph with her. Not to be made official for such event. I could only appear at the backstage… who I am to compare with her?” he mumbled.

He sits there as he browses the Internet, clicking almost each of the news result and briefly views the content.

What Winnie and Vic said triggers his thought.

And he began to ponder about his feelings inside his heart.

He took a deep breath as he closed his eyes, raised his head and leaned his back on the chair.
